COOKING IN THE GARDEN FIELD TRIP - another amazing adventure!
- On May 8, High School students from Woodland and Pioneer attended a spring Cooking in the Garden Field Trip at La Tourangelle Community Garden. Students got a tour of the oil processing facility and learned about the different types of nut oils they process: hazelnut, walnut, pistachio and almond. Students also had a garden tour and then harvested carrots, radishes, herbs, and collected flowers. Students learned to make sauerkraut with a harvest of fresh cabbage. The field trip was sponsored by a partnership between Yolo Farm to Fork and the WJUSD GATE Program.
GATE ART SHOW - Wow and Wow!
- More than 100 WJUSD students displayed their artwork at the Annual GATE Art Show this spring. Seven art classes taught by WJUSD teachers were held in March and April resulting in amazing art pieces. The annual Art Show was held Friday, May 3 in Downtown Woodland at the Historic Roth Building, currently under renovation. More than 300 visitors viewed the art displayed and enjoyed an apple juice refreshment donated by Sugar Bee Apple, a sponsor of this year's California Honey Festival. Save the date for next year's art show, always the First Friday in May (5/2/25).

FAMILY SCIENCE NIGHT 2024
Families from across the district joined us on Tuesday, April 16, for another fun GATE family event! Explorit Science was here with hands-on stations that explored life cycles, plants and animals, nutrition, the human body, fossils, rocks and crystals! Look for Family Science Night again next year!

Family Math Night at Woodland Prairie Elementary - Games, Puzzles, Fun!
WJUSD's GATE Program held its third and final family math night of the year. Nearly fifty families attended and had a fun time playing games and solving puzzles. The Puzzle Play curriculum from AIMS was the basis of the stations that included: Stick Puzzles, Networks, Shapes, Soma Cubes, 8-digit Addition, Tangrams, Pentominoes, Single-player and Multi-player games, Chess, and Klikkos. Look for more math nights again next year!

WJUSD Annual Geography Bee - February 28th
The GeoBee was another success! Congratulations to the winners - 1st place Colson Martin from Sci-Tech, 2nd place Khang Le from Spring Lake, and 3rd place Sambhav Khadka from Woodland Prairie. Great job everyone!

FOR TEACHERS:
*GATE Testing - Universal testing for third grade students takes place each fall. Students in grades 4-6 that are new to the district or were previously absent when tested in third grade will also be tested in the fall. Check with your GATE site liaison for the schedule.
*Student GATE Testing Referral Form - Please complete this form to refer a student in grade 4-12 for GATE testing or retesting. This form is for parents, teachers, and administrators to refer students that they believe could qualify for GATE or are new to the district. Students in junior high and high school will be tested by referral and appointment only. Students may be tested more than once but only tested once per year.

The purpose of the GATE program is to provide challenging curriculum and instruction for students who are capable of achieving at a level significantly beyond that of their grade level. Each year a short test called the Raven Progressive Matrices is given to every third grade student in the district to determine whether the student may be eligible for this program. Absent students are able to take a make up test in January. Students that are new to the district, in grades 4-8, are also tested. Parents are notified in writing if their child is determined to be GATE eligible.
GATE identified students, in grades 4-8, are invited to participate in after school GATE enrichment classes. Annually we host a Geography Bee, Art classes, and the summer Enrichment Academy. Eligible students will receive an invitation for each enrichment program along with instructions on how to sign up. For more information, contact April Guse at april.guse@wjusd.org.
