WOODLAND, Calif. - Pioneer High School student Xochitl Cazares-Rodriguez is serving as a student representative to the Woodland Joint Unified School District Board of Trustees.
Student representatives are high school students who attend regular school board meetings and keep trustees informed about current events at their school.
“Student representatives are a vital part of our board meetings,” said Superintendent Elodia Ortega-Lampkin. “It’s important to our board and our district that we include and incorporate student voices throughout our schools, programs, and initiatives.”
Cazares-Rodriguez, a senior who previously attended Douglass Middle School, was initially encouraged to serve by the school’s previous student rep and her ASB advisor. Now she enjoys providing trustees with regular updates.
“I really like bragging about how good our school is, what we’re doing, everything that’s going on, and all the achievements that our students have made,” she said.
Being involved in extracurricular activities is not new to Cazares-Rodriguez. She also serves as rally commissioner for ASB; Sound and Spirit Committee member; Cheer Team captain; Mecha Club president; and member of the school’s Link Crew.
Link Crew is a program that supports incoming freshmen as they transition from junior high into high school.
“I know when I was a freshman, I was like, “This is a really big school,’” Cazares-Rodriguez said. “Pioneer High School has a lot to offer and it’s hard to find out what you’re really into. Link Crew really helped me and now I want to be able to help other students.”
Cazares-Rodriguez also likes to help others in her community. She most recently volunteered at Prairie Elementary School as a cheer coach, and also volunteered at Empower Yolo and Holy Rosary Church.
After high school, Cazares-Rodriguez plans on attending a four-year university and majoring in political science.
