WOODLAND, Calif. - Woodland Joint Unified School District kicked off a new series of Superintendent meet-and-greet events at Whitehead Elementary School on Tuesday, Sept. 13.

The events, which were first started in May, are part of an ongoing effort to connect with community members, listen directly to families, and provide an update on the state of the district.

Tuesday’s meeting was attended by students, families, staff, and community members.

Superintendent Elodia Ortega-Lampkin began the meeting by introducing herself to families and sharing her personal story, which included being the daughter of immigrant parents; raising four boys in Woodland schools; advocating for her children’s education; and navigating her educational career, which began as a paraeducator in Woodland.

“My priority has always been creating a culture that embraces and promotes inclusiveness, biliteracy, rigorous instructional programs, and high expectations for all students and staff,” said Ortega-Lampkin. “I am a proud daughter of a migrant family, a former English Learner, and a parent of four sons who graduated from Woodland High School. Because of my personal and professional experience, and living in Woodland for 17 years, I understand and identify with the needs of our community. So I’m very excited about partnering with families to ensure the success of each and every student.”

Ortega-Lampkin also provided updates on the district’s goals, which include getting students college and career ready, meeting students’ social and emotional needs, accelerating English-learner achievement, and creating engagement and leadership opportunities for youth.

The series will continue through October.

The next meetings are Sept. 27 at Lee Middle School, Oct. 4 at Freeman Elementary School, Oct. 11 at Douglass Middle School, and Oct. 18 at Tafoya Elementary School. All times are 6 - 7 p.m. The community is invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served
